Paddington Bear celebrates half century with ... (views: 144) The Truth17 August 08

Paddington Bear is celebrating his 50th year in England with a grand tour of the South West's top seaside spots — including Torquay and Paignton.

The famous bear from darkest Peru made an appearance at Dawlish Airshow this week before continuing on his West Country tour which will finish with appearances in Torquay and Paignton on Friday, August 22.

The bear, who always keeps marmalade sandwiches under his hat, first arrived at London's Paddington Station exactly 50 years ago having stowed away in a ship's lifeboat.
He was found by Mr and Mrs Brown and the very first Paddington book was published on October 13, 1958.

To mark his special year, Paddington will be making his way across the South West on Great Western trains.

Beth Rendle, First Great Western's partnership manager, said: "This is a big year for Paddington and we are delighted he'll be travelling with us over the summer as we know there are children of all ages who are very keen to meet him.

"There will be branded goodies for those who meet Paddington, and free Paddington children's packs will be available on-board First Great Western trains for the next few months."

Beth said Paddington is looking forward to seeing the South West's most beautiful sites, especially as it might jog his memory as to how he got to Paddington Station 50 years ago in the first place!

Paddington will be in Paignton between 11am-11.30am on Friday, and in Torquay between 1pm-1.30pm on the same day.
