The capule contained a old 1p coin, The Dawlish Times 1881, The Methodist Recorder 1879 and The Western Morning News 1881.
Mr Fey, the church steward, was delighted at the find and after spending some time studying the documents will pass them on to Exeter Library for archiving.
The Dawlish Times started in October 1868 and publication stopped in June 1903. Devon Library has most publications except 1877, 1897, 1912. What facinated Mr Fey whilst reading the paper was the familiarity of names and businesses that are still around today.
Mr Fey believes that the capule was buried by the stonemason who originally worked on the building.
