The property was later recovered from Anderson's Dawlish home when the pair were arrested.

Jailing 22-year-old Anderson for two years, Judge Jeremy Griggs told him the family had to live with the consequences of what he had done.

"The wife of this family says her eldest daughter no longer likes to be at home alone. The youngest daughter slept with her parents afterwards.

"She was very scared that the offenders may come back and was scared they would go into her bedroom first. The son was upset to the point he was reduced to tears.

"Appalling misery was caused by this thoughtless act, which in sober moments you may appreciate."

The judge put 19-year-old Brimacombe on an 18-month community rehabilitation order, ordered him to carry out 80 hours' community work, pay £330 compensation and abide by an 8pm to 6am curfew for three months.

Prosecutor, Peter Ashman, said that Peter Day, his wife and three children were out when the burglary happened, but a neighbour spotted the getaway car and noted the registration number.

Anderson and Brimacombe, also of Churchill Avenue, both pleaded guilty to burglary.
