Just after 2pm yesterday afternoon on the A379 at Cockwood close to Starcross, a red Citroen Visa travelling towards Exeter and a green Rover 114, travelling in the opposite direction towards Dawlish, collided, seriously injuring both drivers and one passenger.

The Devon Air Ambulance touched down just feet from the tangled wreckage on the normally busy road - which was closed for more than five hours - as firefighters battled to cut the victims clear of the tangled wreckage.

The three casualties were airlifted to the RD &E as soon as they were freed by firefighters from their vehicles.

Graham Jackson the Divisional Officer from Devon Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and called for further assistance including a fire appliance from Dawlish and two from Teignmouth.

PC Sharon Newman from Devon and Cornwall Police said: the road was closed until just after 7pm and appealed for witnesses who saw either of the vehicles just before the accident or who saw the accident itself.
