Some of South Devon's very best beaches have been given the thumbs-up by a conservation charity. The Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide is one of four beach award initiatives, but it is the only scheme that focuses entirely on water quality standards and the risk of sewage pollution, rather than beach management. The society will only recommend beaches in the guide if they meet the Blue Flag water quality standard, and are not affected by inadequately treated sewage. The South Hams beaches include Challaborough, Bigbury-on-Sea, Bantham, Thurlestone, Hope Cove, Salcombe, Torcross, Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands. In Torbay the beaches are Shoalstone, Beacon Cove, Meadfoot, Babbacombe, Oddicombe, and Maidencombe. In Teignbridge the beaches are Ness Cove, Holcombe, and Dawlish Warren.
