Staff at Dawlish Taxis, The Strand, were subjected to a sickening attack after telling a drunk there was a 30-minute wait for a cab on Boxing Day. The incident left an elderly driver with a deep cut under his right eye.

Phone operator Hilary Pincott, a pensioner in her 60s, was punched in the chest and knocked down, and mechanic Paul Collins was struck in the head and chest. Peter Wareham, 71, is due to be examined by doctors amid fears that his eye socket may be fractured.

The attacks happened after a man called to order a taxi and was told there was a 30-minute wait. He called again, was abusive, and a few minutes later stormed into the office where he attacked Mrs Pincott and Mr Collins.

The staff managed to send an emergency signal over the firm's radio before the attacker ripped it from the wall and smashed it on the floor. The signal was picked up by part-timer Mr Wareham and he headed back to the office to help. He tried to get the attacker out of the office but was punched and his glasses were broken.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact PC Simon Boobyer at Teignmouth police station on 08452 777444. A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and bailed to return to the police station on February 2.
