Report on the progress of the wall is there is no progress.

True scaffold and covers are up but the actual wall it seems

is untouched and causing traffic chaos. Will this go on till

the next bloody bank holiday.

What is needed here is for some enterprising people to take the job on themselves during the dead of night when the old bill are asleep, or at least have some lookouts posted. If ownership of this wall has not been established it will remain there throughout the summer months and into the winter months. Don't think for one minuet that this eyesore and traffic bottleneck is going anywhere soon.

Ah! So that's what was causing traffic to tailback up along Exeter Road as far as the hairpin bend. Not easy to get out of The Strand around about lunch time today. Not easy at all. We took one look at the traffic and changed our intended direction of travel.

@Brooklyn Bridge.

It's not the old bill you want to worry about but the health & safety brigade. The hold up is probably due to the lack of cotton wool and bubble wrap to cover the people who are carrying out the work

Ah yes, the Elf and Safety forgot about those bunch of idiots. It really is a shame though for the town to have all these traffic bottlenecks. The locals know it's there but some poor holiday maker that wants to come into the town and shop at what shops we have, I for one would just keep on going or turn around and hopefully find a way out of this maze. All this money spent on the Strand regeneration and nobody can get to it.

By the way could anyone give me an update on the nesting swan under the bridge, by the time I get back to the UK they would have flown the coop.

The icing on the cake was Saturday when someone sent a roadsweeping

lorry at mid day up the centre of the road to pick up the loose chippings between

Teignmouth and Dawlish.

You can bloody well guess the rest.

How about the Dawlish Gazette doing a piece on it.  It's a hot topic here so why not feature it on their front page.

It could be donated to the National Trust. You can then charge to view the incompetance of the authorities. I'm sure Ziggy could do some good photo's and send then to the Gazette with a write up on the historical structure of the collasped wall.

But on a serious note as the summer months get going and with long tail backs of traffic both in and out of Dawlish I'm sure radio Devon would be broadcasting the back ups and so the car travelling public would surly give Dawlish a miss.

Apparently the work will take longer than first thought. The contractors have said more of the wall needs to be removed to complete the safety works and extra scaffolding needs to be brought in.

It could take a further three weeks. Devon County Council will not allow any more work to take place once the initial work is finished involving the road itself until the end of September.

Back in the 1980s President Ronald Reagen made a speech in Berlin to the then president of Russia and he said

" Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall" This wall have become a laughing stock , no laughing matter that the traffic chaos has caused untold business losses. I think i would be safe and lay a wager that come September after the chaos from the summer months this work will then be put on hold until next spring, and then summer again.

Absolute chaos again this morning coaches and buses blocking the entire lower town area. It is time Cllr Clatworthy took some direct action or resigned. We didnt vote him back in to sit there passing the book to others. Get a court order and get the road cleared.

I may start a local group with a view to claiming from those responsible for loss of earnings, wasted time etc. If anyone knows how to do this and feels the same please PM me via this site.

I see some spray painted letters and markings have appeared on the road by the bends - please please please tell me they wouldn't be stupid enough to start digging up that bit of road now, just when we might finally get the scaffolding cleared!

When will we ever get some joined up thinking from the people who control these things. I despair that they actually will go ahead and do this. It will be even more of a nightmare and a summer disaster for town businesses.

DJ if it did affect you why not at least try and find a alternative route thats what i did or was it that you just had to see what was going on with the wall.   Just looking at the problem from a different angle a thousand people have viewed this post and only a few have moaned so did others find alternative routes.   The argument will be people view the post 2or3 times so lets say 400 have viewed it they must have either found alternative ways round or just put up with it.

I think some people are suffering from post traffic chaos disorder.

So for those that enjoyed it first time they will have the chance

to enjoy it again when the work is finally started.

Happy days indeed.

You just could not make it up.

@leatash using an alternative route is of course what a lot of people did, ourselves included on a lot of occasions, how bizarre of you to suggest that anyone would deliberately sit in a queue of traffic because they had to see what was going on with the wall.  but sometimes using that part of town was unavoidable and the queues caused in both directions were a hassle for access even if you didn't actually need or want to go past the hold up itself.
