If you're on holiday from the 9th August it's carnival week. A full weeks entertainment.

I think that it's great that you've listed all of the Carnival events, however sadly the Carnival committee might take a dim view of it. That said, you might be alright unless someone takes a screenshot lol.

I've done my bit and bought the Carnival Programme, but it was more to see if the Chairwoman could top last year's effort.   Glad to see she's reined it in this year.

In fairness to the Carnival Committee

The income from sales of the programme is a key part of their budget, and if they put all the details on the web the sales would drop significantly

In the age of the internet many organisations face challenges - think TV Times and Radio Times - who needs them any more?  But they still exist because they've adapted.   Put more focus into pre-awareness of the Carnival events and you will engage more - more participants, more spectators, more advertising revenue,  more donations, more entry fees, more success.   Many people expect to get their information from the internet these days so if you're not there you become invisible to them.    It's pointless having a website if it's not used effectively.

How much is the carnival programme this year?  I see Teignmouth's is £1 which seems a good deal.

The carnival programmes are £2.

The only reason i put a link to the full weeks entertainment was so people from away coming on holiday to Dawlish might like to organize their week.

There should be no charge at all for the programme ...

Someone should just list all the events on here, so no need to buy one. we are now in the internet age.

Dawlish Carnival has always charged for a programme, it allows you extensive information and to take part in competetions etc that are available within. The sale of Programmes amount to a large section of income that allows the Carnival to be able to put the show on year after year.

However with that said I do not agree with what they spend the money on and I don't think they are transparent at all. Which is a great shame. I would not donate money to them and I feel they need to wise and man enough to step asside and let a new team take over, and yes there are many people who would, they are just shut out from joining the current group.

Over the years Carnival grew and grew, and now it is becoming a laughing stock, it's not the great event it used to be, run by logical, hardworking and dedicated people. I'm not saying those who run it now don't try, but it just does not work anymore in the way they are trying to undertake it. They seem more interested in the Carnival Float than the actual week, which again is fine but step down from you can't do instead of ruining it.

The Carnival Committee has requested that the events be removed due to copyright infringement of their brochure.

For further information about the week, please refer to the official carnival website : http://www.dawlishcarnivalentertainment.co.uk/

Though I suspect that their understanding of copyright laws doesn't match the reality of them.

@wondering, this information is on their website http://www.dawlishcarnivalentertainment.co.uk/PROCESSION.pdf and I think there is no charge.

@Mcjrpc, I completely agree with your second point and I also think what is happening over the week is in the public interest since it involves the commandeering of the lawn and the closing of roads at certain times for certain events which people have the right to know about. In fact, the idea that you are not allowed to know what is going on unless you pay for a brochure is a bit underhand in my view, even if it is in the interest of charity.

Thank you.

I have always wondered why its all a top secret about 'whats on'.

There should be free flyers for everyone with the info ..put adverts around if you really must!

If you go to a Carnival week anywhere else the information is easily available and published for all to see at the event and on the web.

People wont just turn up from away and hope something good is on ..then buy the brochure and find the events dont suit them  ...so they wont return next year will they.

Things never change.. been like it for years.

@wondering

Agreed.

But after last years outburst by Ms Farley directed at 'outsiders', I'm surprised that there is a carnival this year.

Has she or any of the CC apologised for the abuse to the 'outsiders' in this town who gave so generously in the past?

Notice I say 'gave', as being an outsider myself, I will not be supporting this carnival ever again.

Sorry Farley's, but you have diggen yourselves a hole that you cannot get out of with me.

@webmaster.  Maybe the Carnival committee will use the £5k grant from Dawlish council taxpayers to hire a copyright lawyer to sue you.  I suspect not.   Go on, rattle their float.  Publish and be damned.

I'll be on the beach at 6.30pm on Saturday. I wonder if there'll be many people setting sail in their homemade watercraft?

Then on Sunday at 4.30pm I'll be taking advantage of my insider knowledge and will be pulling some strings. TRAINERS ONLY!

At 6.30pm on Monday is my French language class. This week the lesson is going to be about Jeux Sans Frontieres.

I'm going to be in town on Tuesday evening at 6.45pm. I'll be surprised if I don't see groups of people pushing perambulators around.

I'm grappling as to what to do at 6pm on Wednesday. I think I'll take it EASY, EASY, EASY.

I reely believe that anyfin is possible in my quest to be on Catch Of The Day on Thursday at 6pm.

Friday at 7.15pm I'll be proceeding to keep myself afloat.

Our feathered friends will be crying "Fowl!" on the following Saturday at 1.30pm as the stream is taken over by plastic yellow invaders. Later on at 3.30pm however, I'm sure "we'll meet again" for a cuppa and a sandwich.

I normaly save all my 1p 2p 5p all year and give them to the carnival normaly about £40 because of Ms Farley's comments last year they wont be getting a red cent i have donated my jars of coins £38.72 to Combat Stress.  A public apology would be good Ms Farley to all the 'outsiders who contribute large amounts of cash to the carnival i hope more like me will withdraw there financial support untill a apology is forthcoming.

Isn't it strange that the CC have put a block on Ziggy's post so we cannot see what is going on next week and will have to pay £2 for the privelage.

Even their website is less than basic.

In comparison, I also find it strange that I can read the Express and Echo and the abridged version of the Gazette along with many other newspapers for free online, publications that we have to pay for.

Just my point of view.

@Carer, well since the local newspaper is not willing to play along with the carnival's way of making money out of locals, I don't see why this site should oblige. What's on events are facts and facts cannot be copyrighted, meaning newspapers and websites can publish this information,

Hence, I have reinstated Ziggy's events.

For a short reference on the copyrighting of facts see this link on the University of Cambridge website http://www.caret.cam.ac.uk/copyright/Page167.html. The carnival brochure is protected by copyright, which covers the layout, style, photos, artistry, articles, poems and other creative material in the brochure, but it does not cover words and titles like 'The Pram Race' nor does it cover facts like 'The Pram Race takes place on 12 Aug, starting at 6.45pm'. Therefore, Ziggy's posts did not infringe copyright law as the Carnival Committee claimed.
