I have insured my GSH for eight years with animal friends. In July he reached his eight years, and the new policy was due to begin Aug.

The price increased from £24 per month to £31.50 no problem with that and the excess stayed the same £99, I then noticed Per Cost 35%, I called Animal Friends to be told that as well as the £99 excess I would have to pay 35% of the vet bill. I cancelled the policy.

Just thought it may be of interest to some pet owners

It's terrible the way these schemes work.

We didn't ensure our previous collie, and it turned out to be a wise choice

she was amazingly healthy until the last year of her life.  Although we then spent a lot of money on treatments I am quite certain that the terms for an old dog's care would have meant we would never have recouped a lifetime of premiums.

We've chosen not to ensure our current dog, and can only hope that she is equally lucky with her health.  If not, she is a part of the family and we won't begrudge her every care she needs

I hope your dog stays in robust health too.  They give back so much to us humans.

I guess you never know.  We had quite a few issues with our dog when he was a puppy and the insurance company were brilliant.  If it gets prohibitively expensive as he gets older we may have to have a rethink.

I dont mind the £31.50 per month nor do I mind the £99 excess, but I do object to the 35% that to me is a rip off

I would recommend Pet Plan, they have been great. My dog had 2 serious operations, they paid up promptly, excess about £90. and no raising the premium. on renewal.

Fannyann:  I called Pet Plan and asked about the % charges when an animal reaches a certain age,  and yes you pay your monthy premium, the excess and then 20% of the vet bill

Is that because of the age of your dog. ? My dog is 10.

Fannyman: Yes, he reached eight in june this year, give them a call and see what age applies to your pet.

You will know that smaller dogs live longer that large dogs (mine is a German Shpherd average age 11/12) so the age that is introduced may be later for small dogs.
