After bad weather caused the swim phase to be cancelled last year, this year saw much better conditions for the 750-metre swim, 13-mile bike phase and the 5k run.
With more 500 competitors registered the field was split into two waves to enable the swim start to be staggered.
The long cycle resulted in a shake-up of the field and No. 11 James Haigh had now taken the lead, followed by Donald Brooks.
The tough run route started with a climb up the hill on Mount Pleasant Road before heading around the back of Dawlish.
