Cliff homes 'threaten rail line

Network Rail is fighting plans for cliff-top homes it says will threaten a main rail line smashed by storms last year.

Would you spend your hard earned money on buying a home 10 metres from the cliff edge?

I think, but not sure, that Shell Cove House and grounds got sold off to developers before last year's storms. However, there have been cliff falls in that area before so you'd have thought those buying the land for development might have given the whole idea some thought.

(and even if they do, say, get permission to build, who in their right mind would buy a property there so near to the cliff edge with all that history of instability in the area?).

@Lynne. Exactly. Who would buy a property there?  I agree with NR here. I thought that they were retirement homes. I could be wrong.

I think the planning application is for a block of apartments and then further down in the grounds towards the cliff some retirement cottages. I can't check that because I don't know the planning reference (and if anyone does can you put it on here please - ta). I think it is these cottages that are causing concern to NR.

I've just been looking at some of the objections to this proposal

Have a look at one of the objections dated 12th Jan.2015. It is from Plymouth City Council who point out the economic importance of having this rail line open and operating for the further south west (suspect they have last year's closure in mind - quite understandably so) and that they were only made aware of this planning application on the 12th Jan this year.

Clive - you couldn't wake up Cornwall to this planning application and its potential effects on the rail line could you? I mean, given last year's events it isn't as if this is a planning matter that might only impact on Dawlish in particular, is it?

Just been looking online at the planning documents. Seems TDC are still awaiting info from Network Rail and until they (TDC) get that letter the planning application can't go to committee. Looks like it might be the 8th April Planning Committee meeting.

I believe NWR are awaiting answers to their questions put to the developers and until that information has been provided by the developers, and NWR assured of the viability of the proposed building, then the planning application will not proceed.
