No thanks, not with housing association spread all over the estate. Bought a house, yes bought a house, on a development in london many years ago with housing association on site. It only took the occupants of one of these affordable houses to ruin it for eveyone else. They did not work, drank all day and night, had knackered old cars up and down the street, dealt drugs. The kids were worse than the parents. The kids use to damage peoples cars, light fires, jump in peoples gardens and basically be obnoxious and some were only a few years old. God forbid you went round to advise the parents, you would be met with a stream of obscenities and threats to person.

To me any affordable housing on an estate where I have to shell out several hundred thousand pounds is a no.no. It's only an indicator of possible issues, may be not, but I wouldn't buy a property with affordable housing splattered all over it. Take it what ever way you like.

Wow!  My first house was part ownership, up at the Paddocks, great foot on the ladder.  Didn't realise I was viewed that way by people!

@OLD FART has a valid point, it is not fair to spend a huge amount of hard earned money on a house in a benefit street type of place.

He does also say 'It only took the occupants of one of these affordable houses to ruin it for eveyone else'. So doesn't necessarily mean everyone.

I have a friend who rented a flat in an up market complex in Exeter, when the owners couldn't rent all the properties out to private tenants they accepted housing benefit tenants. He had to move out as they partied very late most nights, constantly noisy and made living there unbearable.

Before anyone replies moaning that this is an out of order statement, it happens to be the truth. And obviously I realise that not all social tenants are like this.

Total Snobbery!!! some people work on Housing Benefit, not all workshy sitting on the dole. You can get those sort of occupants anywhere even people who have bought their houses. But Ive said it before we need Social Housing Estates as we used to have because unfortunately home owners are very judgemental towards social tenants.

Wouldnt buy a 3/4 sized Barratt shed affordable or not. They cant even offer what used to be a standard 10 year NHBC warranty anymore, there's confidence for you.

Agree with OLD FART another dump in the making

If there were good well paid jobs around here we wouldnt need PREFAB housing

And just a final thought most folk on HB are in work or retired and then we have the term benefit Child Allowance is a benefit The Old Age Pension is a benefit, so what benefit is it that folk dont like.

@leatash

A bit to young to have lived in a prefab but my aunty did and I was around when they where demolished and as you say tough old things. Have however as an ex traveller lived a lot in Trailers (caravans).

The hatred of new build houses comes from having a contract in the early 80s to fit alarm systems to them for a large uk company, therefore seeing first hand the cheap materials used to build them with and the shoody workmanship employed. There used to be a specialist furniture maker in Macclesfield that made the 3/4 sized furniture for the show houses and of course the old trick of not fitting the internal doors.

If you bought your Barrett house during those times you will remember the scam was kitchens, bathrooms and carpets to your choice which if I remember was a choice of about four designs/colours. All cheap and nasty b grade rubbish bought ex factory in huge quantities. Also as my boss at the time was 6ft 5ins I remember him having to duck at every door way and banging into the light fittings in the show houses. Also remember the garages you drove into then couidnt open the car door to get out, and if you had anything bigger than a fiesta you wouldnt be able to shut the garage door. Also the one inch of topsoil under the ready made turf lawns lasted a season and when you tried to dig it you soon  found out where they had dumped all the building waste.

As has been said above. I am not saying all people who are tenants in housing association homes are like this, but it only takes the one percentile to ruin it for everyone. It's is only the ignorant who would reply to my comment in the extreme. You know who I am referring to

It only takes a small percentage of people with money to ruin things for people too, hence the number of court cases going on at present.
