Dawlish Walking Festival

1 – 10 April 2016

Those taking part in a walk will be able to get a token towards a cup of tea at a local cafe.  Look out for Destination Dawlish walkers welcome signs!

Friday April 1st

The Walking Festival is launched with:

Two performances of The Dawlish Dawdle of April Fools

Bring along a picnic to join us at lunchtime.

10.30am – 12 noon and  2.00pm – 3.30pm

A magical day of playful walks, games and songs in the lesser known places of Dawlish.

Led by Dawlish performer, Tony Lidington and artist friends.

Meet at St Gregory’s Church, Church Rd, Dawlish.

FREE, first come first booked – with about 20 places available for familes (to include less mobile walkers and children from 6 years of age.)

There will be other things to do and games organised in Newhays while the fools are playing.

 

Walking Meditation

12 .30pm

Sharon Dow, a yoga and meditation teacher in Dawlish introduces Walking Meditation for about half an hour.

Meet at the Railway Bridge on the seafront.

Evening Seafront Walk

6.00pm

A walk from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren and back led by Nigel Rhys.Hoping for a nice sunset on the first day of the Walking Festival.

Sharon Dow, a yoga and meditation teacher in Dawlish introduces Walking Meditation for about half an hour.

Meet at the Railway Bridge on the seafront.

A Long Ramble to Mamhead obelisk and back

10.30 am – 4.00 pm

A local experienced walker, Nigel Rhys will take this walk up into the hills behind Dawlish for up to 11 miles.  This walk will be along lanes, muddy footpaths and over stiles, so good footwear and waterproofs advisable as well as a walking ability.

Meet at Dawlish Tourist Information Centre

Walk and Draw

Two separate sessions – morning and afternoon

10.30 am  – 12.00pm and 2.00pm – 4.00pm

All welcome, whatever experience you have.  A chance to be creative and draw the  views around Coryton Cove, The Red Rock and on the beach as you walk locally by the sea with Angie Jenner, a well-known local artist who enjoys walking and painting enplein air.  All materials supplied.

Lanes around Kenton

2.00pm

A short easy walk around Kenton in the rural hinterland of the River Exe with the Teignmouth and Dawlish Ramblers including a stop at the tearooms.  Led by Claire Glasspoole on 01722 501230/07860 834307

Meet at Kenton War Memorial near the church (on bus no 2 route, every 20 mins.)

Sunday April 3rd

Springtime wildlife walk - Dawlish National Nature Reserve

10.00 am – 12 noon

The Reserve wardens will lead this walk to learn more about the wildlife on this reserve including unusual flowers and migrating birds.

Dawlish Local History walk

A short walk taking in the heritage of the town with the Local History Group leaders.

Tree Walkabout

A short walk to discover more about the trees of Dawlish with Dominic Scanion, District arboriculturalist .Meet some rare exotics as well as some beautiful exotic trees.

Tuesday April 5th

Short Seafront walk

10.30am

Meg and Judith volunteer leaders for ‘Walk this Way’ will lead this (sometimes bracing) walk from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren and back along the seafront.

A short family walk around Cofton, Cockwood and Dawlish Warren enjoying the first signs of spring flowers, lambs and awakening trees with Cofton Country holiday staff.

Try out Nordic Walking

2.00pm

Discover Nordic walking  with a technique session with Nordic walking UK instructor Fiona Swan. Lasting for 1 hour, the session will introduce you to the basics and give you a feel for Nordic walking which uses poles. Poles provided. Cost £5 per person

It’s suitable for all levels of fitness.

Thursday April 7

A celebration of the South West Coast Path

Two short walks that can join up as one longer one with the South West Coast Path Association

10.30 am – 12.30pm

Around Dawlish Warren to Dawlish, enjoying land and seascapes, wildlife and weather and led by SWCP volunteers and staff.

Meet at Dawlish Warren car park (outside the warren by the toilets.)

Lunch in Dawlish (picnic or place of your choice) or return to Dawlish Warren.

2.00 – 5.00pm

Dawlish to Teignmouth beside the railway, cliffs and on lanes and back to Dawlish and DawlishWarren.  Some walkers may want to take the train back to Dawlish Warren from teignmouth.

FREE – but any donations go towards the South West Coast Path Association.

Suitable for individuals or families, though the walk will involve some steps.

 

Friday April 8th

View point walk

10.30am

A 3-4  mile walk around the viewing (‘honey pot’ points of Dawlish to appreciate the wider landscape and to ponder different times of Dawlish.  Led by Andrew Turpin and others from Transition Dawlish.

Meet at the Tourist Information Centre, Dawlish.

Energising Walk

2.00pm

Walk some of Dawlish’s past, present and future energy routes – from the sun, human made or elemental this walk aims to get you thinking about where we get our energy to walk!  A short easy walk led by Naomi Wright who works for Destination Dawlish and is a community artist at other times.

A stroll around the Lawn and other parks of Dawlish to admire the trees with Dominic Scanion, Arboriculturalist.

A community led amble around Dawlish to share poetry written about Dawlish, some by famous visitors, some more local and recent.  Bring your own poems to share, or just join in the walk to be inspired.

Railway History tour

10.30am

A tour 2 – 3 miles to highlight the significance of the railway in the area over the last 100 years with the Friends of Dawlish Station and the Local History Group.  Meet in the ticket office of the railway station.

Family Wildlife Safari

2.00pm

A wildlife spotting discovery trail walking around the parks of Dawlish with Naomi Wright and others.  From the big Black Swans to tiny beetles we’ll be looking for all shapes and sizes.
