Another dog attack on the Lawn this lunch time killing a black swan. That's two this month both females, at this rate we will not have any black swans in Dawlish by the end of summer. Then the town could be called  (The town that used to have Black Swans) A number of people witnessed the attack of the Staffy dog and this is a local person. The police had arrived and statements were taken. Speaking with the Warden they have taken some signs down due to a poster on this forum that complained there were too many signs.

There should be a total ban on dogs using The Lawns. The poster who complained about signs was if i remember correctly from Brixam and a dog owner and was put out because she couldnt let her dog of the lead so i hope she reads this post and reflects on her actions.

Completely agree with the sentiments expressed in both posts above. Sad news about our beloved swans - what is the matter with people who think that letting their dogs run riot is acceptable??

I trust that the owners of the dogs concerned will be prosecuted for having a dog that’s out of control - after all, if it can attack a swan, it can attack a child. They should also be fined heavily and the money used to purchase replacements. There is also a case to be made for them being banned from ever owning another animal of any kind.

The lady on Facebook said they didn't recognise the owner I think but the dog was a staffie called Dougie.  She's asked for people to ask around to see if they know who it is.

Why on Earth would the town have taken down the signs? Makes no sense. Now we've lost two more beautiful swans plus the cygnets due to foxes. Isn't there something that can be done to protect these precious creatures? Not only should the owners of the dogs be fined to replace the adults, but they should have their dogs put down and not be allowed future dogs. I have two dogs myself and they are NEVER allowed off lead when on the Lawn. I am both saddened and angry that this has happened.

@Brooklyn Bridge

"The police had arrived and statements were taken".

Well, that's the last we will hear of that then. Unfortunately.

Let's face it, the Police are a waste of time in this town.

Is there any news on the loss of the latest swan due to the staffy attack? Has the owner been arrested/fined? Has the dog been put down?
