A DAWLISH woman who started her business 'on a whim' is celebrating an award in one of the food and drink industry's most prestigious award ceremonies.

Kay Summers, who set up Kay's Cakes four years ago, was awarded silver in the Taste of the West awards for the dark chocolate brownies she produces at her home in High Street.

Not just any brownies these, however, but gluten and wheat free which is the key to her success.

"I'm not able to eat any wheat products and got fed up with going into cafes and not being able to find any decent cakes — so I decided to make my own," says one-woman-band Kay.

"I suppose you could say I started the business on a whim but now I'm at full capacity and would like to expand if I can find someone to come in with me."

Kay is an expert at baking for those who are sensitive to certain foods and her experiments with recipes has led to a range of a dozen delicious cakes which, she says, appeal to everyone regardless of whether or not they have food sensitivities.

As one with her own worries about certain ingredients Kay says her cakes can be eaten with confidence by anyone on a gluten-free or wheat-free diet.

The brownies, which scooped the Taste of the West award, are one of her best sellers but she says that cakes containing lemon or carrot are also surefire sellers.

Kay doesn't have her own outlet but you will find her at farmers' markets and can also buy her products at Darts Farm in Topsham, Fermoys at Ipplepen, Exe Valley Farm Shop at Thorveton and Avon Mill Garden Centre at Kingsbridge.

The Taste of the West awards were designed to highlight successful and high quality businesses across food production, hospitality and food retail. The judging panels are made up of industry experts including chefs, food technologists, food and food preparation trainers and teachers, trade buyers, food writers and home economists.

You can contact Kay on (01626) 864709.
