Dawlish resident and celebrity gardener Toby Buckland will be talking about edible plants at a meeting called by Dawlish Transition Ambition.

There will also be a film about the successful Incredible Edible Todmorden initiative.

The meeting starts at 7.00pm at The South Devon Inn.

All new and experienced gardeners very welcome to attend.

Similar to the community orchard launched in Totnes?

I know the group was/is very keen on the idea of planting nut and fruit trees in various public places in Dawlish.

Got a feeling the idea was run passed TDC in relation to planting some on Sandy Lane Playing Fields and other publicily owned sites.

Seem to remember that there wasn't an awful lot of enthusiasm from the authorities.

Still, if at first you don't succeed ............

Completely agree with the community involvement aspect. I'd hope that a covenant is placed on the orchard, to prevent houses being built on it by future generations...

More info about the meeting.

There will also be a Seed Swop. Bring healthy seeds in a named envelope for a seed swop or alternatively buy seeds for just 50p per packet.

Help formulate plans to decide where food can be planted in the community and for a community feast of locally produced food to take place in the autumn.

Tickets for the meeting only £1 per person. Please phone Dawlish Transition on 01626 862063 to book your place.

Dawlish Transition Ambition would also like to know where there is land in Dawlish that would be suitable for Community growing that is at present not used in such a way. The transition email address is dawlishtransition@gmail.com for proposals

There will also be a Gardener's Question Time, which Toby and 'local experts' will field, so bring along your gardening queries. These can be to do with fruit, vegetables or even ornamental plants. Sounds like a good evening.

Remember 'the key is the soil'.

Be there or be square.

Just thought I'd remind everyone that this is taking place this Thursday.

If you plan on going along but haven't let Dawlish Transition know yet they'd be obliged if you could do so beforehand just so that they have an idea of numbers attending.

Contact details in postings above.

On the subject of edible things, and I know it's not in Dawlish, there's a talk tonight at the Science Cafe in Teignmouth (The Oystercatcher) on the subject of insects you can eat. Apparently there'll be a cricket stir-fry to try. Useful to know when there's only us and insects left on the world (+ plants of course).
