Eric Carter's career started as a reporter for the Bideford Gazette, before he was enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment when the Second World War broke out.
Eric return to Devon in 1972 when he decided to run his own newspaper - the Dawlish Gazette.
It was friend Jimmy Hall, who took over the Sidmouth Herald, that made Eric want to run a newspaper of his own, where wife Betty helped, along with son Nick - who worked as a reporter.
