Teignbridge's top-performing waste collection service could soon get even better for residents as the Council seeks to introduce weekly food waste and recycling collections.

Teignbridge District Council is exploring options around overhauling its waste service, giving residents more for their money while improving recycling figures.

Teignbridge's fleet of bin lorries are ageing and are costing more money and time to keep running. The fleet needs to be renewed in April 2015 but to do that the council needs to think about how it will be collecting from households over the next 7 years.

Teignbridge's waste collection service has consistently proved to be one of the best performing waste service in Devon. In 2012/13 waste and cleansing service in Teignbridge cost £42.72/ household/year - one of the cheapest in Devon.

A long-list of options was put together from external expertise and outline business and performance cases. Many factors were given careful consideration including:

• Pending legislation that will mean all authorities may need to remove card from current food and garden waste collection
• Plans for a wider pan Devon waste service
• The opportunity to improve the recycling service and reduce long-term costs
• The projections for population growth in the District
• The need to replace our waste and cleansing vehicle fleet in April 2015
• The bulking station where our recyclables are stored and processed is now at capacity
• The Forde Road depot needs to be reconfigured to accommodate a bigger fleet of vehicles

Based on all the information, the list has been narrowed down to the two best options.
