ALLOTMENTS!
Now for some who make comments on this forum and appear not to have a brain cell lodged between their ears, An allotment is a piece of land provided in the main by your local parish council for enjoyment, leisure and pleasure.
If six or more people ask for an allotment, the parish council has a duty to provide them for members of the parish.
So let your Parish Council be proactive instead of reactive for a change.
Food prices are set to rise by huge amounts in a few years, so get digging now, don't wait for it to happen, be there when it does.

You learn something everyday viaduct! That's a very interesting point you have raised. I assume this is a ruling going back many years when spare land was plentiful? I seem to remember many years ago there being allotments on the bit of ground that now houses the new holiday homes underneath the mount pleasant. I have a picture somewhere. I know that in many parts of the country there are now waiting lists for plots which five or six years ago were largely abandoned. I also believe that this kind of thing would help get communities talking to one another again and create a bit of spirit.

There are allotments already at Brownsbrook.

Yes I know, they pay exorbitant rent for a plot and the land belongs to the Luscombe estate not the council. The council do not own any allotment plots in Dawlish but I stand to be corrected?

There is a bill going through parliament as I speak which if it goes through to it's conclusion, will give local authorities the right to impose duties on developers to provide allotments, either on the site to be developed or on other land.

Does anyone know what the waiting list is (how long) in Dawlish?

Perhaps the provision of allotments could be on the wish list of Dawlish Town Council to whichever supermarket ends up building here.

Bob,

You also raise a very interesting point. I wonder how willing the Protheroe's would be to revert the land they have built such ghastly apartments on, back to allotments? After all, they do 'so much' for their community..... But we all know that whatever they do, it is just a ruse to facilitate the building of their empire.
